Coronavirus Vaccine in Taiwan - April 2021

I don’t think that 600NTD is bad to skip the wait, remember, Evan those in the priority groups are being charged 200NTD for these fees so it’s only actually 400NTD extra of like 2 Starbucks coffees.

But who actually wants to drink Starbucks coffees in Taiwan?

It’s like five Cama coffees or eight 7-Eleven coffees.

It’s eight latte caffes at OK Lao!

Guy

When we see something truly odd like this, it makes me ask: why?

Here’s a brief list as I see it:

  • AZ arrival in Taiwan coincided with confused messaging in Europe about the rare blood clot incidents (“If Europe doesn’t want them, why am I being asked to take it?”)

  • The US—which has not approved the AZ vaccine, as it doesn’t need it—sits on piles of AZ stock before (finally!) agreeing to export it. (“If the US doesn’t want this stuff, why I am asked to take it?”)

  • Possible crazy discussions happening on Line and other platforms; possible interventions / manipulations by bad actors to muddy the waters, spread disinformation, attempt to cause social chaos, etc.

Is there more?

Guy

I was wondering about that too. Maybe also the reports of the doctors and priority groups apparently not wanting it, and a perceived sense of safety?

Has the government done anything to encourage greater uptake? I still think they should give away a NT$15 off bubble tea voucher with every dose.

Premier Su publicly took it.

Minister Chen publicly took it.

All of the municipal heads took it.

The President of Academia Sinica James Liao took it.

Clearly they need more than this. Perhaps a new messaging campaign featuring Takeshi Kaneshiro: Want to see the world? Get vaccinated!

Guy

There’s just an (unusual) lack of push factor here to get over the hump of the fear of vaccination for many, along with the fact some batches of moderna are coming.

I feel it’s the med professionals that are holding it all back as many wait for moderna, it’s a poor signal for the rest of society.
The same professionals who throw drugs at people like candy.
Yeahs there’s probably a zillion hysterical LINE msgs as well.

Takeshi is always willing to help.

Taiwan has plenty of handsome celebrities here to choose from.

Dubai, the kids from Mayday, Wu Kang-ren, James Wen…

Here is my favorite from Latin America, Chayanne, taking the vaccine:

The message is different: if this guy who is strong and ripped takes it so should you fatty who looks like an unkempt Teletubby. Do it for your mothers.

In regards to booking my 2nd jab, I’m gonna call tomorrow and arrange it.

Are people booking it for around the date shown on the card, or are people following the UK method and booking it a few weeks after that because studies show a longer wait has more immunity?

I’m not sure what the logistics are for arranging it. I did the first jab with MacKay, and as far as I can tell, their online system only lets me book two weeks ahead - so for that route, with a recommended second dose of June 16th, I’d have to wait until the beginning of June to make the booking anyway.

I’ll be trying to get the second jab by the end of June for sure, simply because of the timeline of when I hope to get to Canada. According to this website, “Individuals may not be fully protected until 7-14 days after their second dose of the Pfizer or AstraZeneca vaccine.” There’s a non-zero chance I’ll be trying to get to Canada at the start of July, so I’m getting that second dose as soon as I can.

What it comes to down to is that any trip to visit my parents will be a last-minute booking, depending on quarantine regulations and ticket availability, so I want to make sure I’m ready for that - I don’t want to get caught on July 10, for example, with a requirement that I need to have received my second dose two weeks earlier in order to avoid quarantine. (All just hypothetical at the moment; who knows what the regulations are going to be in a few months.)

Also news that Taiwan is going to get some moderna vaccines.

By the way Pfizer and Moderna (which are both similar) is not without bad side effects too.

That’s my plan.

I read today anyone can buy a jab soon for 600 NTD. Where would I go or who would I talk to to inquire about getting the jab? I’m supposing I would have to go to a hospital and not just any clinic. Sorry I haven’t scrolled through this thread.

You’re late to the party!

For @DrewC

I can confirm that far eastern hospital has plenty of spaces, for now.

Maybe you can wait outside of hospital every day and ask if there are any vials that are going to expire that day and can you get one shot for a discount to say, only NT$10.
Kind of like soon-to-be-expired food discounts at stores. ha haha

Someone I know booked an appointment today at Mackay for tomorrow.

There seem to be plenty of slots. Just call around at the nearest hospital.

I just checked Mackay actually and all of the slots seemed to be pretty much full (with one exception that’s currently at 59/60), according to this link. Am I looking in the wrong place?

Far Eastern Memorial Hospital still seems to have a lot of open slots.

Does anyone have the correct link for NTUH? I just have this one, but that doesn’t seem to cover the self-paid vaccines and I can’t find the link for those anymore.

I can confirm that too , I got my shot Yesterday afternoon at Far Eastern Hospital 亞東紀念醫院 and there was a lot of plenty spaces
