Costco Thread 2025

How is it compared to their other standard minced beef?

I found that one to be too lean for burgers but good for mexican stuff.

Burger patties are fatter than the regular minced beef because they have to be to stay together, I think something like at least 30% fat is required for burger patties.

Regular mined beef aren’t intended for burger patties anyways, they’re often on the lean side.

But in my experience it’s basically just minced beef that has the right fat content, and then pressed into patties, no filler as far as I can tell. It’s why I get them instead of minced beef because it’s cheaper per pound.

What’s the ingredients? If its 100% beef then I’m interested.

Well I don’t know how its done in the states but in the UK you have the choice to buy lean mince or a higher fat percentage.

The higher fat one is good for burgers. And yes you can make burgers out of the lean one if you like.. you can do whatever you like with it. But there is generally a sweet spot fat ratio for burgers.

I’ve bought some burger patties - it was literally just beef mince made into a very rough burger shape- from a Japanese supermarket here and the fat content was actually too high.

Mined beef? Back in the old days, beef came from cows, not dragons and not out of mines either. No wonder it’s dirt cheap!

100% beef unless the ingredient list is lying.

Because that’s all it says on the ingredient list. It’s from Australia.

Hurry because the discount ends on the 23rd.

I’m sure exceptions exist but I’ve never seen supermarkets where you can specify your fat%, I’m sure the wet market beef dealer can (though I don’t run across beef dealers at the wet market often).

It’s 20% fat.

Well, then minced meat must be 15% or less then.

But there’s a minimum fat% for patties to stay together at all and I know under the wrong condition the costco patty will come apart (like if you handle it too rough during cooking).

Just smash em(that keeps them together). Why wouldn’t you? Otherwise they will probably come out looking like mei er mei burgers.

If you do that, you squeeze all the juice out of the burger…

They’re fine for burgers, surprisingly good actually. Had them a couple of times at a friend’s BBQ, then bought some for home to cook in a pan.

I wouldn’t personally be doing the TL culinary technique of defrosting and depattying them to save a couple of hundred dollars over the regular ground beef because, well, it’s a bit weird and I imagine the resulting texture wouldn’t be great in other dishes.

Is costco membership worth it for a single person?

Depends on the single person. It’s only NT$1350 a year or whatever, so not really a big deal even if you only go occasionally.

Is it cheaper than carrefour?

Depends what you’re buying since they mostly sell different stuff (and/or more of it) so it’s difficult to make like-for-like comparisons. I would say yes, especially for certain things like big bags of frozen berries.

You could always just try it and see. The membership fee is refundable if you’re not satisfied.

I see, do they have a better meat selection? Do they have non frozen meat, steaks, lamb cutlets etc?

Yes and yes.

I’m sold. Thanks.

Not true.

I’ll give them a try. The burger ground beef situation in taiwan is pretty rough so its worth a try.

You can also increase the fat content by grating some frozen butter in. I’ve done that before for kofta kebabs using the regular Costco ground beef (12%, IIRC). They were pretty good.
