Costco Thread 2025

My son answered my Line message when he got out at 4 from school. He said it’s the one he wants, so I picked him up and went to Costco. He used part of his 10,000 to buy one. There were only 3 left! So it’s probably too late now, at least at the Xizhi Costco.

Went to Costco two times on black Friday. That goes against everything I stand for.

NT$120 off shrimp dumplings??? That’s a deal not to be missed! Get amah and the kids in the car and off we go!

For branded stuff, like the DJI drone or LEGO, it will be at that price again in a few weeks, I actually think that drone “discount” price was the previous price at some point. The “bargain” stuff has typically not been stocked before and won’t be stocked again in the future.

How are the brownies and cakes at Costco here? Are they as sweet as their American cousins, or am I better off eating Taiwanese corn soup and garlic bread if I want the same level of sugar?

The brownies are not bad. I occasionally pick up a box to have with my coffee. Just wish they would make bigger boxes - one box is not quite enough, but two is a bit too much.

Never thought you’d utter these words…

Once you get to my age, you need to cut back a bit on the sweets.

Plus I had some unfortunate run-ins with an overly narrow door and a defective chair with overly thin legs at McDonald’s in recent years…

Yes, very sweet. If corn soup and garlic bread taste like brownies in sweetness level to you, then I definitely recommend staying away from the bakery section as Costco.

Are frozen blueberries done for this season?

Updates from Guandu Costco today:

  • No eggnog (yet, he says hopefully).
  • No pumpkin pie (ditto).
  • The good pita bread unavailable again. But hey, I’ve seen that in stock twice in 2025, which doubles how many times I saw it in 2024.
  • Baby spinach is available again, which is good, since that was the fourth thing I wanted and I wasn’t having much luck so far.
  • Revamped cheese bagels continue to malignantly suck life-force from that corner of the store. I miss bagels that I want to eat. Ten or fifteen years ago Costco was my second or third choice, and the better (for Taiwan!) places closed, and now not even Costco seems worth it.
  • Tons of Christmas-ish chocolates and cookies.
  • I haven’t seen the good (expensive!) imported sliced ham in a long while, possibly over a year.
  • Big Kavalan whisky display again, which I didn’t make use of, but usually that means mild savings if you want a bottle. (Which I do. But I’m not willing to spend the money at the moment.)
  • Didn’t notice if frozen blueberries were there or not.
  • Food court pizza options remain cheese, or alfredo, or seafood. I had a calzone. I found it initially passable but by the time I was done, the quality of the ultra-processed meat filling - I’ll be generous and put it on a tier with cheap hot pot places - was making me mildly regret my choices.
  • I did enjoy the chocolate chip cookie at the food court.

Note: the majority of nutritionnlabels are based off of databases. Both public and private companies. They often aren’t testing every single section of every single animal. The nutrients are known averages for XYZ. I wouldn’t follow them very much outside of rough protein, sugar and sodium. Very rough.

As an example. That label you posted calculated the cal wrong, it should be 252.5. 253 if they round. It’s actually illegal, that label :hugs: A common mistake, but just to point how “accurate” they are  this label is because they based the 100g level off of the serving size, and they need to calculate it accurately via column, not row. But they also fudged their serving columns Cals as well, lol.

Is the wine advent calendar back this year?

I didn’t see it, although I wasn’t looking. But I spent a lot of time searching for eggnog so I’d probably have registered an advent calendar if it was there.

How long does eggnog (or Costco eggnog) last unopened?

I bought a bottle maybe 2 or 3 years ago in a frivolously festive moment but never got around to trying it. Every now and again I look at it and wonder whether it’s still drinkable, but when that happens I never have the mood of “I could totally drink 1.75 liters of this weird alcoholic egg stuff”.

Back in the day we Americans put up wallpaper by painting a whitish paste on the backside that we made by adding water to paste powder. After vigorous stirring that paste was viscous bordering on gooey, maybe kids today would say slimy.

That’s my guess, but live a little and let us know!

In the US there is no wine (yet) but there are 4 new calendars.

  • FIFA World Cup 12-day calendar
  • 12 Days of Scent (6 hours per candle)
  • 24 Days of Damn Man nuts
  • 36 Days of Italian biscuit cookies

To me they all sound good.

Two or three years is probably pushing it! A few years ago I deliberately bought an extra bottle and used it for a “Christmas in May” sort of thing, and that was fine.

We got a bottle of some no-age statement Kavalan at Costco. A 1-liter bottle for about 1350 nt. It was excellent. I had doubts because I’ve gotten some NAS Kavalan before that wasn’t great, but this was good stuff. I imagine they’re selling various different varieties in the display you saw. This bottle we got was with the rest of the whiskies.

The Benriach 10 year is a great buy. Under 800 nt for some very decent Speyside whisky. No artificial coloring (probably chill filtered, though) and around 43% abv. Triple cask aged. Good stuff. A tiny bit sweeter than what I would consider a classic Speyside, but that’s just me being picky probably as most would enjoy the sweetness.

No matter what Costco does, some people will always give them a pass (same goes for any companys marketing loyalty schemes). I never could understand such people’s logic, being literally lied to and poisoned yet still support them becuae “fuck the local grandma that is dirty” mindset.. Guess that’s why such folks don’t get what good food is and buy shit from Costco :joy: Or mcdonalds, or whatever similar example of clear high level corruption.

Enjoy your eggnog. Blueberries. Salmon. Or whatever :hugs:

Be smarter folks. It’s not easy, but worthwhile for both personal health and also economic health of the country

Um … thanks for the withering contempt, I guess?
