Costco Thread 2025

Answer is apparently “no” then.

Oh man. I’d be cautious of the hot dogs. Only thing in Taiwan I will not eat. Think about it. Where I’m from hot dogs are made of the ground up extra bits - tail, ears, snout, etc. In Taiwan those are the main course. Kinda makes a guy wonder, what’s in the hot dogs then? I don’t know, but I would say you are braver than me and I’ve tried just about everything.

Halloween is over before it even began!

Still, only two and a half months to go, get yours quick before the Easter stuff comes out!

The hot dogs are Kirkland Signature, and you can buy them yourself back in the refrigerator case aisles.

Imported, not local.

In clickbait polls I skimmed over during the summer, KS dogs were consistently rated up there with Hebrew National and Nathan’s as among the best-tasting, real beef hot dogs you can buy in the US.

Are you sure that’s the case in Taiwan? I don’t remember seeing any Kirkland Signature hot dogs here, and the ones I’ve had (and occasionally bought, somewhat regretfully) are a local product that I found noticeably different from the ones in the food court:

It was the case in Taiwan, not sure about now.

Just a few years ago I bought them. They come in packs of like 14(?), and I remember wishing I’d put the leftover, uncooked dogs in a dang zip-lock bag before I’d stuffed them in the back of the fridge and a few days later had had to clean up the meat juice that leaked out.

If Costco Taiwan has decided to stuff GAO sausages in their Kirkland deli hot dogs, I’d be surprised. That particular deli item is (supposedly) watched carefully by Costco upper management (esp the price). It’s accepted as a loss leader.

The Gao ones aren’t terrible. My main objection is probably that buying them plus the 12-pack of hot dog buns means having to eat an ungodly amount of hot dogs in the several days before the bread goes stale, after which I’m sick of hot dogs for a month or two.

The food court ones are nicer though (relatively speaking). The bread seems different too, actually.

Costco hotdogs in Taiwan are made from pork, not beef like in the USA.

Also, you can freeze your hotdog buns.

Yeah obviously — you can freeze anything if you really want to.

I just don’t like freezing bread, and even if I wanted to I don’t usually have enough room in the freezer.

I always assumed they were US hotdogs. Either way, it’s not pleasant to think about what goes into those. I enjoy them but have them only once in a great while.

The optimistic thing to tell yourself would be that in Taiwan they put the more palatable parts of the animal in, because that’s what’s left after the local market has taken its pick of all the weirder bits.

Haven’t seen the Kirkland ones on sale for a few years, they were the only ones worth buying. Were they the same ones they sold in the deli? Always thought they tasted a bit different, perhaps my warming up skills are not up to par!

Definitely, doesn’t have that sweetness most Taiwanese breads have.

A lot of faff for little reward and requires planning!

I always assumed the hot dogs in the food court were the same KS hot dogs they sold in the refrigerated cases, but I never asked. It never occurred to me that Costco would source two kinds, it doesn’t make sense financially. But that was back in 2021, and now I’m reading that in Taiwan the food court hot dogs are pork.

The deli hot dogs were steamed in a separate case from the steamed buns back then. I liked them but they’re not really finished off imo.

The way I make them is two steps, steam them then grill them. If they’re good, all beef hot dogs the steam-then-grill method is pretty hard to beat. Costco leaves off step two, but for nt$150 I never minded.

Aren’t they 50nt for the hot dog and drink combo? You must be mixing things up with the $1.50 price in the States. Either way, you can’t beat that price.

The food court hot dog tastes like proper hot dog. I have no idea what 7-11 hot dogs are made of but they taste off, like flavorless, tastes like it’s made of plastic or something. The Costco food court hot dog is also quite long but the ones sold on the sales floor don’t look quite as long. So are they they same?

The Costco hot dogs are way too salty…and this is coming from someone who likes salty food.

I tried the calzone the other day. It’s pretty horrible.

I asked them why they sell jumbo hotdogs at the restaurant to eat onsite, but you can’t buy them in the store to take home. No explanation given.

You can balance the salt with raw onions. They’re free, after all.

It’s just not enough since they ditched the dispensers.

I believe the dispensers are back (at least at the Xizhi Costco). And man, people are taking full advantage of them.
