Costco Thread 2025

No shit? I haven’t been in a while. :open_mouth:

They put up dispensers with a crank. Not much comes out at a time.
But this dissuades people who steal onions, as they would have to crank for a while to fill up their plastic bag.

Because they probably realized that filling individual containers of onions took up too much materials, man hours to be worth whatever people are stealing.

Remember those things are all loss leaders so if they are spending an extra 5 cents per cup of onion they have to give out, that adds up to a lot.

You could always take a ruler and micrometer with you the next time you go to Costco and report back on your findings…

By your measure, no. One type is reported by you to be apparently “quite long” whilst the other type, as reported by you, “don’t look quite as long”.From your report it’s possible that one type is shorter than the other type and one type is possibly longer than the other type. How much shorter and how much longer is unknown at this time, however if the reports are accurate then they would indeed not be the same. The answer is apparently “no”.

which is why the aunties now spend longer cranking, as I’ve observed

I guess they don’t care about the long line behind them?

I mean even if she doesn’t it would surely draw attention from staff.

In my experience, which quite possibly is past its best-by date, many Taiwanese patrons don’t actually stand in line behind the one grinding out all the onion to be taken home. Instead they’re sitting on empty seats nearby, planning their sprint when s/he wraps things up.

I heard no official reason from Costco but how much in onion do you think the old lady is stealing? All that cranking you get maybe one onion worth of chopped onions, which is perishable by the way because it’s chopped (whole onion can keep forever, but once you chop them, it’s a different story).

It’s maybe 10-16nt worth, I’m leaning towards 10 because Costco buys them in such massive quantity that they get much better prices than we do. I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s around 5nt per onion or less.

How much labor and materials does it take to pack a small pile of onion into plastic tubs? A worker probably stuffing them and they might do like say 5 or 6 a minute if they’re really fast, but maybe 3 a minute per person. So that’s around 150 tubs per hour and at 190nt per hour of wage (plus benefits) they’re now paying something like around 1nt per tub in labor costs. That doesn’t sound like a lot but the thousands of tubs they gotta surely give out each day it really adds up.

Not to mention the cost of the tubs, and the environmental impact of all that plastic.

They probably decided letting some lady steal 5nt worth of onion is not worth spending even more individually filling each container.

I’ve never used cranked-out onions on a Costco hotdog.

I’ve also never seen anyone clean the onion container, so, noop.

And why not simply talk to the old lady or guy making a line. “Hey, you’re being outrageous,” would seem to be enough of a social judgement to get them to move tf on.

Standing close and glaring has been the limit of my foreign impudence so far

I haven’t had the opportunity to just look at someone and say.”Noooo.” Not in a while.

Yeah, I wouldn’t want to get into an argument over freakin’ onions in Costco. With cameras everywhere, it would be shared too. No. Not for me.

I’m often tempted to video these things and share, but I guess I’ll just leave that to others. Too much of a hassle.

There’s a traffic signal by my house, and without fail, when I’m stopped waiting for the green light, there will be at least one person who runs the red light on the road perpendicular to mine as his light changes from green to red. Some drivers will run that red light waaay past after it has changed. I’m really tempted to video the carnage that takes place every morning. One of these days.

Does anyone know if the four n twenty pies have stopped being stocked? I haven’t seen them for a couple of months and can’t find them on the website… TIA

They were *’d items and sold at a discount for a while so likely no longer stocked, probably best to call them or ask in store to be sure.

Would that be the ones with four and twenty blackbirds baked inside?

Saw another onion freeloader yesterday. A guy was eating lunch with his wife (or partner). He had a big pile of onions in aluminum foil and he was eating spoonfuls of it between bites of pizza. His partner was smiling, and he also thought it was funny and even took a picture of the pile of onions. Of course the bulk of it must have been taken home, but that sight of him eating spoonfuls of onions was just about as wack as you can get.

I’m sure if you sat there for a while you could see all kinds of weird onion scenes.

I hear this is popular in Korea, where guys would get big piles of onion and mix it with ketchup and mustard at Costco and make a salad.

I like that story from Korea. Does Costco supply relish too? with that they could include mayonnaise and let folks make their own remeloude/special sauce.

They have relish, but no mayonnaise.

But guys could be copying those Korean trends, plus onions are cheap.
