Cruise Ship Quarantines - Coronavirus 2020

Think the US govt is doing the right thing rescuing the Americans off the ship. But Travis AFB is VERY CLOSE to where I live. Hope coronavirus doesn’t escape from there !

Unless those three imbeciles who flew in from Hong Kong had it and spread it through Ximending. :unamused:

Were they Taiwanese folks or foreigners? I wonder if they used the ‘egate’

Not sure about nationality. Presumably they were processed properly but just lied about some info so they wouldn’t be caught evading quarantine. Hopefully they are found and slapped with a fat fine.

Anyone can lie. How can the government rely on this is out of me

Likely to happen, hope NIA find and ban them for forever, but perhaps the damage might be done already.

I have confirmed with official US government sources that US citizens will be evacuated from the Diamond Princess tomorrow evening.

However, all passengers will be required to undergo a further 14 days quarantine at a military base upon arrival. Passengers who elect not to get on the evacuation flight will not be able to return to the US until an unspecified time.

Gee Matt, some of us wish that you and your fellow passengers had missed Taiwan! Lol

Princess Cruises President provides an update to the Diamond Princess passengers and crew.

Mostly bad news for the passengers and especially bad for the crew.

Agree that this announcement should be of little comfort to passengers/crew. Facial/body language are very nervous. Continual references to the Japanese government demonstrates that the company has no control/voice in the issue. Wording is too often vague (such as “may be able to disembark”) and deflective (“draft plans” etc).

Beyond the awkward delivery and completely noncommittal attitude, the “draft plans” themselves are rather dodgy. For example, between testing and the results (three days later), there is no guarantee that individuals testing negative would not be infected within that time frame. Chances of false positives and the worrying reported rate of infection on the ship are other causes of concern.

No news is good news, right?

What will happen to passengers who would get negative results and be disembarked? Will they freely fly to places they want to go? Or will they be quarantined somewhere in Japan for a while again?

Good point. The announcement only mentions that the company will do their best to get customers home. But, if the Japanese government has developed any sense (and access to resources) over the last few days, there should be some kind of more professional quarantine. Regardless, what WAS honestly noted in the announcement was that individual countries and transportation services have final say in the “getting home” stage.

American from cruise ship docked in Cambodia tests positive in Malaysia for coronavirus

KUALA LUMPUR/SIHANOUKVILLE, Cambodia (Reuters) - An 83-year-old American passenger from a cruise ship that docked in Cambodia after being shunned by other countries has tested positive for the new coronavirus after being tested in Malaysia, health authorities said on Saturday.

The woman was the first passenger from the MS Westerdam, operated by Carnival Corp unit Holland America Inc, to test positive for the virus.

The ship docked in the Cambodian port of Sihanoukville on Thursday carrying 1,455 passengers and 802 crew. It had spent two weeks at sea after being turned away by Japan, Taiwan, Guam, the Philippines and Thailand.

The passengers were tested regularly on board and Cambodia also tested 20 once it docked. None was found to have the new coronavirus that has killed more than 1,500 people, the vast majority in China.

The American woman flew to Malaysia on Friday from Cambodia along with 144 others from the ship, the Malaysian health ministry said in a statement, adding that she was in stable condition.

The woman’s husband had shown symptoms but tested negative, it said. The couple were the only ones of the 145 to show symptoms, the ministry said.

A spokesman for Holland America declined to comment.

Fewer than 300 people were still on board the Westerdam, according to a company official, who declined to be identified as he was not authorized to speak to the media.

Company officials have said passengers had been routed through Phnom Penh and Kuala Lumpur to fly back to their home countries, but they have not said that all passengers had taken that route.

Or Vandine, Secretary of State at Cambodia’s Health Ministry, declined to comment.

U.S. President Donald Trump has thanked Cambodia for taking in the ship in a rare message to a country that is one of China’s closest allies and has often been at odds with Washington.

Cruise ships around Asia face widespread fears they may be spreading the virus. The biggest cluster outside China has been on the Diamond Princess, quarantined off Japan’s Yokohama. Out of about 3,700 passengers and crew on board, 285 people have tested positive and have been sent to hospital.

Vietnam turned back two ships on Friday.
