This neurosis is getting ridiculous. Why would China drop an atom bomb on Taiwan, therefore rendering it uninhabitable? And the retribution in terms of sanctions and blockades make even an invasion a ridiculous option.

Oversimplification. It is a propaganda victory at home and abroad to take it. There is valuable infrastructure here, and human capital, and the wealth that was taken from the mainland by the KMT which has grown a lot. Not much in the way of natural resources besides the geography, but much more than just the geography.

I think I’ve told this before: when Taiwan had its first election in 1996, China made threatening noises and Bill Clinton, having transited an aircraft carrier group through the Taiwan Straits in 1995, dispatched a second carrier group near Taiwan. Tensions ran high, and the French diplomatic office in Taipei contacted my French friend in Taitung, asking him to form an evacuation committee for French citizens living here, and give them the name of the president and the corresponding secretary. He nominated himself corresponding secretary and his son as committee president, since, he explained, they were the only two French citizens living in Taitung at the time, and at three years old his son was too young to be able to write.
(At least they cared, the Canadian Trade Office didn’t bother.)
Please do not spread propaganda. Their “wealth” wasn’t that much. They had to relocate and supply millions of Chinese in Taiwan and fund a war effort between KMT and CCP troops, all the while using that money to suppress Taiwanese protests and resistance. How much was left after that? I would bet they actually caused more pain than gain financially at least in the beginning. Before they pivoted to modernizing Taiwan and American investments poured in.
Most are just parking lots in the basement.

Maybe, but I’m sure they’ve all been individually and rigorously inspected to ensure the highest standards of code compliance and structural integrity in the event that the above building is damaged. 
There are big differences between the ukraine invasion and a future taiwan invasion. If china comes its all or nothing and they have told everyone for decades thy want everythung. No one really knows putins stance. Its a way different war.
Additionally they arrest and make people diasappear on the daily, i think many people are bieng bit naive about how low the CCP would go if they actually invaded. Once they do, i wouldnt expect much decency and compassion. They dont have either right now pre war.
I think people may also not be considering mental illness and assume an invasion would follow standard logical procedures for murdering foreign lands. To add insult to injury, they feel taiwan is theirs and are entitled to do with it as they please. These are not good places to be.
I am also very skeptical of harsh sanctions on china. Unlike russia ,hina has our nuts in a vice grip. By our i mean nearly every country.
Thenther censorship and control. To this day tey ha e closed doors to the planet about covid which has affected the entire globe . Im not so convinced we would know about their plans months in advance. If w did i am REALLY not convinced anyone would take them serious! I mean they are constantly treatening us with war daily.
