Motorcycle Questions and General Hangout

She’s not very flattering about it. She starts off well then mentions the throttle occasionally gets stuck at low revs wtf !
It does look nice I’ll give them that. She also mentions that the bike looks beautiful but the exterior wiring looks kind of shoddy.

Yeah, main complaints I’ve heard is that the gearbox tends to eat itself and/or the wiring goes and both of those are problems I’d like not to have if I’m honest. And the guys I heard that from bought it new and had problems within 1-2 years…

Shoddy Chinese quality. At least the old carburator SYM wolves just seem to run forever… Mine is FI tho. Mixed bag there so I’ve heard. The mechanic I go to said that is the main worry, as it looks like the wiring on mine has been fixed up before. So maybe it has a new FI system, who knows, but even if it does that’s not exactly a great start :joy::joy:

Speaking generally, I’m surprised Forumosa doesn’t have a motorcycle super thread… At least none I can find. But I guess the lack thereof implies a lack of demand.

There are quite a few posts but some over a decade ago. Quite a bit of stuff about off roading.
I nearly always buy things second hand it annoys me a lot if I buy new and it had problems. A cheaper second hand bike I almost expected to go wrong , but sometimes they don’t.

Must’ve missed this. How do I say it politely… Scoots bore my Zoomer brain. Require more stimulus! My gearbox mostly works well, so I quite like shifting around as traffic demands. More importantly, however, I find the seated position on all scooters I’ve rode rather uncomfortable…

They’re pretty exhilarating in a straight line, but the wheels too small for corners in the wet mountains at above average speeds.

My thoughts exactly, plus buying new commands quite a premium and the deflation hurts my brain quite a bit :sweat_smile:

If I only did necessary maintainence on my Wolf, I still have put less cash into it than any new bike on the market. And if it can get me up hehuanshan, even with some difficulty, there’s just about nothing it can’t do. Short of offroading, that is. Anything on tarmac is kosher in my experience…

Broader question, possibly noob question: I’ve been noticing more backfiring (smaller quieter pop pop from the back) usually when easing off throttle or shifting. I think it’s more than when I got it… At least, I’m noticing it more, and I found it particularly common up high at hehuanshan. Does that indicate a potential FI problem? I read that means it’s running lean, but honestly I’m too inexperienced to know better :joy:

If it ever sounds like I know what I’m talking about, that’s only because I read a lot about it. I’m practically uneducated

This too. And I mostly like to go to mountainous areas, tea areas, etc, not only bec they’re the most fun (Twisties:D), but because I like to go hiking too. Altogether, I like motorcycles is basically the long and short of it, but I have some ok reasons to prefer it over a scoot scoot.

On deceleration or throttling down, it maybe fuel in the pipes that’s popping, as was at altitude when you noticed it I would start with the Air filter.
Take it out and inspect it, if its in good condition give it a good clean then put it back in. There has been a bit of heavy rain over the last couple of months that can put a lot of crap in the filter.

You can get another sprocket for it, but again if you don’t want to keep it no point in modification

I think the new w175 has ABS.

A lot of the newer model, low mileage bikes on FB are not priced down much from new. I think they hold a lot of value here for some reason. I’d rather pay an extra 30K NTD and just get it brand new

That I think is due to massive import tax. Yes, that’s a Taiwanese made bike but the foreign bikes are taxed so much that it keeps the resale value high. It was the case that a new motorcycle bought in say the US or UK was about the second hand value of an originally imported bike in Taiwan. Motorcycles here are still kind of regarded as play things rather than scooters.

grey market :skull::skull::skull:

For some incomprehensible reason they don’t sell the w175 here but will sell all the 800s :man_shrugging::man_shrugging:

I also still kinda think the w175 looks rather… Unexciting. Not bad, but really, it’s a cool old style bike, it should be better on the eyes! And it’s got spoke wheels which are cool but still, just… :man_shrugging: Idk. I like how most of the wolves look a bit more. But maybe im just biased and dumb. It’s not impossible.

Wyd Kawasaki? Why u do this?

I’m rather worried about that because I feel it already stalls rather easily in first, wouldn’t putting a new bigger sprocket on it make that worse?

You’re not wrong.

That said, how many miles do y’all think is too much? Like, looking at a one or two year old Yamaha, should I be looking under 10k or even lower? Or is more ok because Japanese reliability?

I have noticed that the Japanese bikes definitely do hold value weirdly here though. Guess buying new isn’t so bad in that way, but buying used more frustrating lol

Oh, i just went to the website and couldn’t find it. I was sure it was there

Yeah and this makes me all the angrier because while u were gone I started looking at them again and they’re really not so bad maybe

Esp the black color or the SE green color

How about the Honda CL 500 that @Shaun008 suggested, did you look into that?

I commented on it somewhere or other here. Like the design, exhaust a bit silly and bad for stuff and pillion. All in all not a bad option, but no panacea. Honda makes totally sick looking bikes though.

Maybe what we all need are those bmw bikes. Idk. They’ve got it all, but God they’re huge.

I’d prefer a w800, but will still lean towards the rebel

I’m getting off into silly land here but does anyone have any idea how much repainting costs? Really starting to like the idea of the Suzuki Vstrom 250 but the colors are just too much. I feel like one of them done up in the green that the Honda CB500x has would be just perfect for what I want… Good for touring, white plate, Japanese quality, legal import, comfy. Some minor concerns about Suzuki gearboxes aside, it ought to run not too dissimilarly from the Gixxer 250 since it’s more or less the same, just a bit heavier and configured as a (road focused) adv bike. So probably not the snappiest off the line, but as I’ve said – I like arriving fairly comfortably, not racing. And best with a nice partner in tow

Otherwise, post trip oil change and fuel filter clean done and, good news! It’s burning oil! I kinda suspected this because of the, well, smell, but it’s pretty definite now. Also found a not insignificantly sized shard of metal on the fuel filter area but not entirely sure whether it was actually from the interior of the bike or not. I fear my vacation weekend trip up Hehuanshan has not done the bike well

Anyhow since I’m basically using this thread as motorcycle hangout general now, some pics from the trip. Super recommend. Stay in 廬山. It’s a cute but unfortunately very economically depressed village as a result of increasingly common rockslides. Seems the village got it’s Fame as a hot springs resort area, but… that’s getting more difficult. The hot spring at the hotel I stayed at was closed, but they could still pipe the water up to rooms so the lady friend and myself enjoyed that quite a lot after getting rained on at the top and on the ride down the mountain and essentially freezing für a bit. There used to be a car bridge across the river in the village but it seems to have been wiped out; there are hotels slowly buried in the rocks and don’t silt from the landslide. To replace it, the silt and loose stone was used to make a rather steep and very slippery ramp down to the riverside, where there was a improvised bridge with concrete tubes run under the silt and rock to make a crossing. Nearly fell off it when I got caught in the silt. Good times! The most recent typhoon, however, has washed that away too. It’s a great little area and just, at least for me, immensely comfy. I prefer it leagues over the 小瑞士 bullshit they’ve got at the mountain above 廬山, the development of which is probably not insignificant in contributing to the landslide issues. If nothing else, it’s a real place with real problems, and it clinging on to life is kinda precious in its own right.

Maybe I’m being sentimental. Idc. Here’s some pics to encourage you to make the trip out that way if you’ve not yet done so.

at this point, considering pretty seriously picking up the Vstrom SX 250. I’m hoping to find somewhere to test drive it this evening. It just kinda hits all my criteria, although it’s more expensive than I’d prefer by about 1000-2000 USD. But it’s a 250 which is nice. All the convenience of white plate, and the most power you can get on that. And then I think if i were to resell it in a year or two, I’d still get a decent bit of the value back because I expect it to stay a bit rarer (less guys here can ride it because not tall enough + it’s more expensive + not the racing monkey choice etc) but also is Japanese, new, etc. I’m obv not looking to profit on the resale but I think it’ll do ok.

I’m looking to make this decision a bit sooner than planned because Wolf is just increasingly ‘skipping beats’ while idling, it’s inconsistent in starting, etc. I still love the damn thing but I think realistically I need to get something else before the bomb goes off in my hand. It impressed me more than enough taking me and the passenger and 25kgs of luggage up Hehuanshan, and that’s a high note I’m kinda ok with going out on.

That said, I will have to buy this one new as it’s basically brand fresh new to TW. As far as that goes, what to do? what to expect? Can any bargaining be done at the dealership? I’m planning to pay with cash only, no loan bullshit. If they’re asking 158 or whatever, can I just give em 150 and go for a shake on it? All and any experiences appreciated.
