RIP Bob Probert

Same reason I quit hockey as well. Drinking and hot tubbing after a day on the slopes with ski bunnies is a far more satisfying sport than talking loudly and carrying a big stick with other men at 6am in the morning.

Not to mention the high price of equipment, lift tickets, gas, and liquor/accomodation keeps out the riff/raff too commonly associated with small town hockey.

Well, I was a liberal socialist at that time of my life.

As classy as ever.
Care to address the issue brought up (hockey vs. football/rugby) or uneven splitting of posts in Morgue instead of making a cheap shot?

Seriously though, shouldn’t all legacy discussions be kept inside the Morgue thread or moved to the appropriate thread? Right now it seems as if political discussions will be split, but popular Canadian hockey players are ok to discuss and argue about?

Regarding the ‘classy as ever’ comment–aren’t the worst manners of all, at least according to polite, affluent and polished society, to comment on someone else’s bad manners?

I mean other posters call hockey players pussies and clowns on this thread, but you’re only calling my comment out as being classless and offside?

Again, why not split this thread into Sports?
Man, Probert would have kicked your fascist ass downtown and back.
He’d have beat you smart.
By the time you stopped rolling your clothes would have been in style.
Woulda thumped you like a redheaded photographer.
He’d have hit you so hard, your fucking family woulda been dizzy…

What would I have been doing in smelly Windsor (his hometown) in the first place? That’s CAW union territory. I’d rather visit Bumfuck , Egypt than have to spend time in that hell hole.

Come on, man, I don’t believe that.
One quick tunnel ride away from your beloved US of A?
Why, you’d have been sniffing up there like a crack whore on Thursday…

One quick tunnel ride from a third-world Democratic-machine jurisdiction that elected Kwame Kilpatrick in the past.

You don’t understand!!

I ain’t afraid of you motherfuckers!!!

Not at all; it’s very fast paced and exciting. The highest levels of competion, (Olympics, World Cup, World Juniors), rarely see any fisticuffs at all. These, by and far, get the highest gate figures in the sport.

So your Proberts and their gormless likes are basically your Italian and French football divers?

Hardly. They have a place to fill in North American hockey where the game is generally much more physical than it is at the international level. Each team has a couple enforcers to make sure that the other team’s goons don’t go after their star players, lest they end up like Jonny Wilkinson or other talents in contact sports who are forced out of the game from injury before their time. You’d never see Probert, Domi or McSorley take a dive; they’re the types that step up and take it on the jaw, if it means saving one of their teamates a situation that might result in injury.

I don’t disagree with you, it does get played up: Tie Domi was sure to square off against Probert at least once a game whenever their teams met, but that was because he was the kid who wanted a piece of the big dog. Unfortunately, that is one aspect that does get played up quite a bit. That’s obvious, since it is the one thing that you seem to know very well about the sport. Too bad: It’s a great game, mate. Sorry you don’t like it.

Btw, I skied and all through school, as well, so you and Chewy can rest assured that the two are not mutually exclusive. Hockey has plenty of bunnies, too; they’re just called puck bunnies!

So…is it time for Wendell stories or Theuren Fleury stories???

I’m just funnin’ at the Canookislovakistanians, citizen. I used to love playing hockey when I was a nipper.

Some of those fellas on those youtube vids are putting in good, solid hits. Stopped happening in ruggas about '94. I remember the Canuck-SA game at the '94 RWC - damn, the Canucks put in some good hits.

And we went on to win the RWC.

Anyways, ruggas boys know better these days - they play the ball, not the man. The monetary loss of being suspended aint worth it.

Nonetheless, I rate ruggas and ice hockey as the two top ‘hard men’ sport (I had a friend who played ice hockey - he was the strongest person I’ve ever had a rib broken by, um, known).

Amen brother.

Oh dear lord don’t go there!

And you forgot Glenn Anderson.

That’s not the term we used out West. It was Puck F**ks.

great video! that is my boy Rod Snow (prop #1) in that video, one of the finer Newfies you’ll ever meet. guy used to hit like a ton of fucking bricks.

question…why does the video maker keep replaying the cheap shot the saffie takes on the guy when the other saffie is holding his arms? you guys don’t like fighting 1 on 1 down there?

our boys were no doubt drunk for that match up. no chance going in, might as well get on the beers early.

No idea. Depending on which video you see of this brawl it either makes the Canadians look like pussies, or the Saffas look like cheap shot takers.
In reality, if you see a proper video of the game and the brawl, there were some cheap shots from both sides, but mostly it was a good fight. One of the better rugby brawls and lasted more than a minute, almost two. Both sides gave a good accounting of themselves. Rod Snow certainly was an interesting character in that RWC.

And I assure you, Saffas have no problem brawling 1 on 1. Just ask Bakkies Botha et al.
But rugby (union and league) isn’t like ice-hockey where they let the two guys get on with it. Team mates always get involved to “participate” or stop the fight, which leads to more bodies entering the fray etc etc. In the old days it invariably turned into a free for all like the SA vs Canada game (although that video doesn’t show the best 1 on 1 bits, but good vids of that brawl are tough to find nowadays), with a group having at it and a few individuals piling in to each other on the periphery.
Since the start of the professional era in 1996 the penalties against teams and individuals are too high, so other players get involved more to stop any escalation than anything else.
