Some of those fellas on those youtube vids are putting in good, solid hits. Stopped happening in ruggas about '94. I remember the Canuck-SA game at the '95 RWC - damn, the Canucks put in some good hits.
And we went on to win the RWC.
Anyways, ruggas boys know better these days - they play the ball, not the man. The monetary loss of being suspended aint worth it.
Nonetheless, I rate ruggas and ice hockey as the two top ‘hard men’ sport (I had a friend who played ice hockey - he was the strongest person I’ve ever had a rib broken by, um, known).
There, I fixed it for you.

Canadians… Entertaining.
great video! that is my boy Rod Snow (prop #1) in that video, one of the finer Newfies you’ll ever meet. guy used to hit like a ton of fucking bricks.
question…why does the video maker keep replaying the cheap shot the saffie takes on the guy when the other saffie is holding his arms? you guys don’t like fighting 1 on 1 down there?
our boys were no doubt drunk for that match up. no chance going in, might as well get on the beers early.
No idea. Depending on which video you see of this brawl it either makes the Canadians look like pussies, or the Saffas look like cheap shot takers.
In reality, if you see a proper video of the game and the brawl, there were some cheap shots from both sides, but mostly it was a good fight. One of the better rugby brawls and lasted more than a minute, almost two. Both sides gave a good accounting of themselves. Rod Snow certainly was an interesting character in that RWC.
And I assure you, Saffas have no problem brawling 1 on 1. Just ask Bakkies Botha et al.
But rugby (union and league) isn’t like ice-hockey where they let the two guys get on with it. Team mates always get involved to “participate” or stop the fight, which leads to more bodies entering the fray etc etc. In the old days it invariably turned into a free for all like the SA vs Canada game (although that video doesn’t show the best 1 on 1 bits, but good vids of that brawl are tough to find nowadays), with a group having at it and a few individuals piling in to each other on the periphery.
Since the start of the professional era in 1996 the penalties against teams and individuals are too high, so other players get involved more to stop any escalation than anything else.
