Should foreign troops be sent to Taiwan?

You should. However I think @Mataiou found out that you cannot about citizenship unless you are already a citizen as it is covered under the LY which does not include non citizens.

Been discussed here.

What does LY refer to?

Hope you never move to Australia. Did you know permanent resident non citizens cannot get the HECS discounted tertiary education fee and have to pay the same tuition fees as international students. Is that hypocrisy there?

Permanent residents don’t get all the same benefits as citizens in Australia either. Should Australia let PR visa holders have the right to vote? Some other countries do so.

Legislative Yuan.

But I’m not sure what the current conversation has to do with the question of this thread?

I think each country will make that decision based on the context of the situation and what they have to lose if Taiwan falls to China. The response of the US will likely determine how other countries choose to participate in such a war.

If anything Taiwan should be part of Japan.

Just to correct this permanent residents are entitled to the discounted tuition (commonwealth supported place) but are not entitled to interest free government loans, HECS. Upfront payment only (or sort out your own finance).

My brother- in-law lived in Australia from 7 years old as a permanent resident. He paid for university upfront. He made a choice that was the best for him at the time.
He only naturalised as Australian last year, after living there for 24 years.

Non permanent resident foreigners don’t get either. This includes New Zealanders who generally are not permanent residents but can live and work in Australia indefinitely

And not everything is truly equal everywhere. Australian permanent residents are eligible to live and work in New Zealand indefinitely however only New Zealand citizens can live and work in Australia indefinitely and NZ PR holders are ineligible.

Permanent residents in AU have a longer waiting period to be eligible for social security payments whereas in Taiwan as long you contribute to laobao you benefit from the system.

although none of this has much to do with sending troops

I think Japan should be sending troops to Taiwan if China invades.

They probably will, if only to show China who’s boss :joy:

I agree . The U S should have given Taiwan back to Japan after WW2. Most educated people on Taiwan then spoke Japanese and it had been part of Japan for 50 years
But today hainan island would be todays Taiwan if the U.S. had relocated ROC soldiers and govt there

Uncle Sam was going to help
the ROC because the ROC was part of the Allied powers in WW2

Alas they may not come to a war but the war may come to them !

For sure China will attack Japan and possibly South Korea. This next war will involve the U.S. and when Russia joins its WW3

Let’s hope so. As should the world, at least those that care about human rights and basic freedoms.

As a Canadian citizen, even though I am taiwanese in every way except for paperwork and birth place, I would hope ā€œweā€ send our troops in the case China invades Taiwan. I think people frame this completely wrong about sending their children to die for another country that doesn’t care about us. Seems ignorant at best. It’s not even about defending Taiwan, or our population, it’s about defending like minded ideals, morals and ways of life. To allow such a blight on our humanity would be a true shame. Like it or not, we are global now in our species, and we need to step up to that plate.

In this sense, even though Canada is relatively pro China it seems, I would hope ā€œweā€ would defend democracy and freedom in the same way we did in WW2. I would be embarrassed if we decided late in the game to get involved, like the US did in WW2. I much prefer prevention rather than reaction. If it comes to war, I would hope that countries that declare their moral high grounds defend Taiwan just based on that basic point of braggery. Before that, I truly wish such countries would try to prevent such disgraceful action. Such as recognizing Taiwan, pushing HARD against Chinese human rights issues, tarrifs, banning imports alltogether, fucking something. But we don’t see much of anything [official and clear] outside of fluff after the fact which holds no weight. This is embarrassing. And if it keeps up, I guess countries will eventually need to decide which side they are on, because it won’t just be the troops being sacrificed. The writing is already on the wall. Greed allows us to justify it. Which is gross. Its no wonder so many people now need things explained, as we don’t seem to be falling back on ethical frameworks, simply fame and finance.

Edit. We should publicly announce military support to Japan for when China invades them. Not because we are capable, but just to send a message without sending a direct message that we stand in solidarity towards a common enemy against decency.

I think there’s a better chance of foreign troops being sent to Ukraine than Taiwan (which is not recognized as an independent country by most including the USA). At most it will turn out to be a big proxy war.

Also China has nukes. China nuking US carrier groups which they see as invading their territory could be seen as self defense, and may not be enough reason to escalate to US/China nuking each other’s homelands. I don’t think US would risk getting nuked over saving some semi conductor factories.

If we had US base and the following quantity of troops here now, China wouldn’t likely invade. Put a few bases here, make it hard to avoid hitting them if China invades. Force them to attack US. That’s prevention. Not sailing a few boats around sometimes while saying ā€œWe still don’t recognize Taiwan officially, not even for health care during a global pandemicā€. It’s really gross how cowardly everyone is just to make bank on quasi slave labor. :face_vomiting:

Russia has nukes. I think even more than China.

The US might not send troops to Taiwan but Why would the US be more likely to send troops to Ukraine? I don’t see it.

While semiconductors are important. The main reason the US would send troops is that they would lose their position in the world as a super power if they don’t and Taiwan falls. This is worth more than chips to the US.

  • Most countries recognize Ukraine as an independent country but not Taiwan. Sending foreign troops to Ukraine would be seen as defense of an independent country by most countries. Also I didn’t specifically specify the US, but they could send a mercenary force that runs independently (but I don’t think they will, because lately their response is to increase US defense contractor spending and sending over older obsolete equipment rather than direct capital contribution). It’s probably more likely that another country such as Germany sends foreign forces into Ukraine.
  • Most countries have cut off the Russia economy. Sending troops is just going one step further. The China economy is much bigger and more countries are reliant on them. Sending troops would be a last resort after all economic ties are cut off.
  • Much easier logistically to send troops to Ukraine, which has a land border with EU. Sending troops to Taiwan may involve getting past a sea blockade. Many foreign nationals have already joined Ukraine’s war this way by going through a land border, but it would be difficult to get to Taiwan.

china is the country that could see a shipping blockade. Straits of Malacca easy to stop shipping to China

Who and what did they say exactly- not ā€œsomething a[l]ong the lines ofā€-
meaning ā€œI don’t know what they said.ā€
What kind of idiot would say ā€œI want my to raise my kids to be ethnically Canadian and not learn Chineseā€, given that my hometown of Vancouver has a population that is one-third Chinese and has an ethnically Chinese mayor ? -alright, maybe someone from Alberta
Quite frankly, I would have to have more info than your suspiciously-sounding-made-up quote to believe this.

How does that affect the possibility of foreign forces being sent to Taiwan?

Also I think the trade routes will get re-routed through different countries similar to Russia. Singapore is a neutral country.

About 6,000 for Russia. Same for US.
About 400 for China. Basically enough for China to say ā€œif you nuke us, we’ve got enough to nuke your main cities back back.ā€
