Trip Report on: Tainan Yenshui Beehive Fireworks Festival 鹽水蜂炮節 2018

It appears to be Thursday March 1 2018 sandwiched between 228 Holiday and Lantern festival Holiday making for what could be a long 5 day weekend for some people.

(Yenshui seems to be used more than Yanshui for the event title even though event is in Yanshui)

Anyone noticed or have any updated info on dates or details?

Bump. Is Thursday night the night?

Looks like Friday, March 2 at 7pm from this website of Tainan things to do.

Concentration and release of playground in saline country

I’m locked in and going to spend all day Thursday and all day Friday there.

Aside from helmet, gloves, jacket, etc. for protection, did you buy some ear plugs. Have fun. Never done it myself.

  • Full face helmet, gloves, boots, socks, covering for every part of body, ear plugs, extra eye glasses for basic protection, duct tape.
  • Small hand towels.
  • Water bottle/holder.

How about the traffic there?

Traffic will be heavy but I’ll be avoiding rush times. Hotels 30 minutes away in Chiayi are sold out on Friday and Saturday night.

I would also recommend some anti-fog spray for the inside of your helmet.

Okay.

Update?
Traffic problems getting there?
Pics?
Wounds?

Report: The Yanshui Beehive Fireworks Festival 鹽水蜂炮節 is one of the loudest funnest things I have ever done. The most dangerous fireworks festival in the world. You don’t only watch it, you feel it. Lots of people dressed up from head to toe in protective gear standing right next to huge “beehive” displays of fireworks shooting and firing everywhere.

The beehives move around the town and light fireworks at different locations on the street corners or in front of temples. The first night of the two-night event is just a warm-up. Most of the events on the first night are finished by about 9:30. There are about three different beehives moving around to about 7 locations in the city on the first night. The second day has 4 beehive groups visit about 18 different locations. There is an official schedule as the beehives move around the city. You can follow a beehive or you can just find a location where they pass and wait as they come by. Follow the god parades with gods in their little display cases around and you’ll go to where the beehives happen. If you can’t find the schedule then just start looking for a beehive or gatherings of people. They don’t follow the schedule exactly and could be early or late to different locations. The eating night markets are open late all over town including the Old Street.

Supplies

  • Full face helmet, gloves, boots, socks, covering for every part of body, ear plugs, extra eye glasses, neck scarf, duct tape to cover any openings
  • Small hand towels.
  • Water bottle/holder.

Helmet and gloves and jacket and things are not necessary unless you plan to stand right next to the beehive. You can stand away and watch from a distance fine without any special clothes or protection.

Traffic and parking is quite challenging. Lots of walking required to get to and from car and parking and to find or follow the beehives around the city. There are almost no hotels in town so plan on fighting traffic and public transportation to go somewhere else when finished.
