TW fishing boat attacked close to the Philippines

President Ma was at the Buddhamas cerenmony, where he wanted everyone to have a moment of silence for the crewman killed by the Filipino Coast Guard. But instead of actually staying silent, Ma went on to count from 1 to 10 loudly…

Surely it’s a new standard for a moment of silence… though he should have counted down.

A moment of silence is very quick in Taiwan.

10 Let’s take a moment to reflect on this tragic incident
9 There’s only 9 seconds left, then we can go back to our original agenda, then get our lunchbox.
8 Bear with me for another 8 seconds on the loss of one husband/brother/father/friend.
7 Don’t worry, this silent moment will soon be over.
6 We can talk about revenge after our meal, which will also be served cold.
5 Please be patient, I know it’s difficult.
4 The red light will soon turn green, start revving your scooter and inching your car forward.
3 We are almost there, please don’t break the law.
2 Hold your horses for Confucius sake!
1 Oh my Gah, my brain is about to burst.
0 Sheeeesh, that was hard but we made it.

Now that the Filipino representative went to the family’s home and apologized, and The Philippines offered a joint task force on the investigation, is this over?

Seems they got the apology and follow up justice, no?

That Phil vessel is back at port and the crew suspended for now, no doubt. But TW Navy plans to board the vessel if it is spotted in international waters and arrest its crew.

if they offered an apology, then perhaps there’s some compensation for the family as well?

Awesome, but without reading and becoming a lawyer in the process, whats the basic structure of the laws of the sea and how do they relate in this case?

And in practice with other countries, such as the USA.

Oh man. Thank God you told us! That makes it ok to mistreat immigrants, of course.

MCS-3001, the boat claimed to be almost rammed, and then went on to machine gun a fishing boat.

Unless those Taiwanese investigators are the size of Shaq, or Filipino coast guards are the zise of gnomes, otherwise, it looks like non-suicidal fishermen wouldn’t attempt to ram that coastguard ship. Also, suicidal fishermen probably won’t flee.

and this is another shot of the TW vessel in question.

My God that’s an ugly boat. It is of a similar size, and has a nice harpoon nose! Probably made of concrete, so ramming would not be out of the question as a tactic.

a bulbous bow is for reducing drag and be more fuel efficient. I think filling it with concrete would be counter intuitive…

by the way, these two ship would only be of similar size if a Honda Civic is of similar size to a BMW M5.

The thing i find most damning is that the Phil boat ran away as fast as it could as soon as it spotted a much larger vessel. One that could do it harm.

If it was protecting national waters , it should not have run but instead have continued to protect the waters.

FAct is they were not in the Phil territorial waters, but possibly within its 200 mile economic zone. But the fact that Taiwan’s zone overlaps means that it becomes a grey area.

They should not have shot up the unarmed Taiwan boat.

They shot up a defenseless fishing vessel with only 4 unarmed men onboard and then ran when within sight of an armed vessel.

Don’t forget that they supposedly have a video of the event but refused to release it.

Saw on one news that fishermen are asking lawmakers to allow them to be armed.

that may happen. But then it will be hard to judge the going ons. Imagine if in this case the Taiwanese fishermen were armed. Then who is to say what exactly happened?

I think currently TW boats will have to be escorted by TW military vessels.

Armed with what, harpoon guns?

Given how strict gun laws in Taiwan are I seriously doubt any fishermen has firearms, unless they got it from some gangster.

They can take ques by watching Whale Wars, and learn from both the Japanese whalers and the Sea Sheppard.

Last I heard was Philipines claimed they apologized but TW said no such thing. Is that the latest?

Either way, makes zero sense for the Filipino coast guard to fire 32 (!) shots at unarmed TW civilian boat.

They did “apologize” but the TW government wasn’t satisfied with the apology because they weren’t taking any action on the matter. Also the government itself (it was the ambassador who offered the “apology”) did not acknowledge the apology.

Why is that? Because they’re really in the middle of investigation? I’m sure a lot of Philipines’ image portrayed is from TW media. But they killed a foreign national for no apparent justifiable reason. Won’t acknowledge apology? National pride?

On a lot of comments iv read on phil news sites they are all blaming the taiwanese for poaching in their waters.

Some are calling for war with taiwan even.

so there are idiots on both sides then…

anyway, speaking of war, there’s a hacker war going on.

Use any ftp tool to log on to ftp://btr.gov.ph
user name: anonymous
no password

And you can see a whole bunch of Taiwanese created folders. You may even add your own. Use your ftp tool, or use commandline.

ftp btr.gov.ph

then enter anonymous when prompted for user name, no password

at ftp> prompt, you can enter

and you will generate new random useless folders on that site. Some Taiwanese are using it as a free Dropbox.
