Wack Things In Taiwan 2021

With the kind of complains we see around these days, how would I know? :upside_down_face:

Yawn. Demerits. Whatever.

Fired and serve jail time for shirking their sworn duties and failure to protect the people.

There is a marketing opportunity here for earhole shims.

Is that your prediction?

Seeing this discussion about cops not filing reports reminds me of my time in Waco Texas. The cops had a reputation for protecting the local Baptist university (Baylor University). Once my dad and I were talking with cops who complained about any cases involving the university. The cops would write up their reports and then later their boss would tell them someone from the university called so just throw the reports away.
Now 30 years later the university had dozens of rape cases go unreported or ignored by local police (and the university). Nothing has changed.

Oh no. Not at all. There will be no justice. She was only a foreigner after all. No one cares.

There you go!

Bit late to the breakfast place this am, and the stuff I usually get was gone.

Laoban, in trying to explain what was in the filled mantou he had left, does the universally recognised arms to side elbows pointed back “funky chicken” action.

“Ah, chicken”", ses I dully

“No no no” ses he “pigg-uh”

I dont much like pigg-uh in its standard guise, but given the mixed message, in a spirit of enquiry your humble correspondant secured the last one, and can confirm it was in fact pork.

So pigs CAN apparently fly in Taiwan.

Just not very well.

Due to the enormous increase in the number of cars parked on red and yellow lines being reported by the general public, the government intends to solve the issue by not allowing members of the public to report cars illegally parked on red and yellow lines…If you can’t solve the issue, solve the problem of people telling you about the issue!

Maybe people should stop buying and using so goddamn many cars, especially the hulking monster cars that dominate our city spaces lately. :face_with_symbols_over_mouth:

What you bring up is definitely an absurdity. But I’m against allowing members of the public to report this (and maybe other) infractions. I think it’s bad for social harmony, and for the red line parking, it’s impossible to avoid in the city. And while a cop would refrain from ticketing if what you’re doing is running in and out of a 7 11 at a place with minimum danger, the pictures and reporting by the public don’t allow for using such common sense judgement. The pictures don’t tell the whole story.

We need a bounty paid to the reporters of the violations. That would fix all the violators.

No it’s not, there’s always a car park around. When the chances of getting caught and fined are high enough people will use them and walk.

Illegally parking your car and inconveniencing other drivers for your convenience is bad for social harmony.

The proposal still allows for reporting parking which endangers others and or/interferes with traffic flow, such as close to junctions, on footpaths and bus stops so one has to ask, if there are red lined areas where parking on them meets neither of the two criteria, why are they red line areas?!

But some have made a living or good side job of getting a cut of these fines where it’s easy and where the red lines don’t always make sense. For example, after this new scheme was started, a mom and pop hot pot place on a low traffic road with plenty of room to pass closed shop because their customers were getting ticketed left and right. Meanwhile the hot pot franchises at the mall a couple of blocks away are doing great.

In most places in Taipei, perhaps an argument could be made that it makes sense to have this system in place. Outside of Taipei,
(New Taipei City is what I have in mind) definitely not always.

Now maybe these jerks in my area will have to find cars that are actually doing something detrimental.

Edit: And I’ve heard of fistfights and worse because of this. I really don’t feel it’s good for society.

Oh god not this again. THERE IS NO REWARD FOR REPORTING TRAFFIC VIOLATIONS AND THERE HAS NOT BEEN ONE FOR A VERY LONG TIME.

Yes, illegally parking and then assaulting someone who pulls you up on being an inconsiderate jerk is definitely not good for society!

I agree. Whether there is a reward or not, it isn’t good for everyone snitching on each other. Call out bad behavior if you want, but getting people to snitch on their neighbors is a bit shit.

Oh really? Then I stand corrected. I’m sure it was in place when that hot pot shop went under. The owner complained about this to me several times a few years back. A swimmer who loved jazz. Very sad to see him close his doors.

Setting up a system in which cops look the other way for pedestrian near kills, running red lights, speeding on mountains where grandmas and grandpa’s are walking, etc. but ticketing everyone parked in an alley to eat dinner with family is not good for society. Allowing everyone to be involved in such ticketing while they also ignore the real infractions is not good for society.

If the cops can’t process the volume as it says, there’s no good reason to continue it and it could even be detrimental. It’s just parking so it makes sense. Let the police handle it.
