Wack Things in Taiwan 2026

Imagine being a tourist and not aware of the recent event/news. You get to the prime photo location, and you see this strange behavior.

That is not what happened here. He didn’t go into one of those high mountain areas. Nor did he require a permit. The rescue services did their job , he stopped when he realised how dangerous it was, and he was rescued. He shouldn’t be charged for that , unless you agree with the govt punishing every mishap that happens.

Also this was in Taitung.

You need to review what you post first otherwise the government may charge you for misinformation .

This rules

I may not agree with the gov’t punishing everything, but I am not suggesting that. Under the laws I posted it seems that he, like all citizens/residents of Taiwan, will have to pay the costs of rescue. The fines are a separate admin issue and he would have the right to appeal if they do impose fines. BUT, he put himself in that situation. He seems to be familiar with the mountains??? If u r out of water, turn around and go back the way you came. If he went off-trail, that’s also his choice/responsibility.

Not trying to argue here. Both of us only know what we have seen in the news, details may make the issue clearer.

On my old hiking trail used to often run into a lady who volunteered for mountain rescue. She said she usually had to carry in around 40kg of equipment on the rescue missions. She had to go hiking often to keep in shape in order to join the rescue missions.

Just too bad some people do not follow basic hiking concepts like informing people where you are going, staying on established trails (unless you are carrying the right equipment and working in a team), carrying enough food/water, GPS if going off trail, etc.

This is dangerous work rappelling down mountains to rescue people or flying helicopters into mountain ravines. I guess there is always going to be people like him who do not care about the danger of sliding down steep mountains…or not enough common sense to leave the sax and bible behind and bring the important stuff. Too bad need to risk so many lives to save people like this…luckily there are such search teams.

I hosted a group of search and rescue guys at my house a few years back. A friend in San Francisco is a long time search and rescue volunteer. He was here to conduct some training and experience sharing with Taiwan search and rescue teams. They all came over to my house and we watched MIT (Taiwan mountain climbing program).

Police from Taipei’s Shilin precinct later identified the man as a 23-year-old surnamed Gao who worked in the food service industry,

 He wanted a quick snack.

Slightly OT, (mods feel free to move!) - just curious about the warnings against stream-tracing when lost, is it simply that most streams have non-navigable sections, (i.e. waterfalls)?

My rear right tyre burst yesterday on the highway , fortunately there was an exit just there , I drove off and got the car towed to the tyre repair shop.
They kept asking me do I want to replace two tyres and I kept saying no thinking this was the usual upsell technique.

Eventually a junior guy point out my other rear tyre was worn down right to the metal thread :grimacing:.

Yep gonna need another mechanic.

Yes I agree with all of this, although one must say that many people participate in rescues precisely BECAUSE it is challenging and dangerous work.

My point of contention is trying to charge citizens or people enjoying the great outdoors for emergency assistance. Government workers often get paid handsomely from our taxes , and we as citizens or foreign residents or even tourists should have the right to fuck up occasionally and expect the state won’t nail us to the cross for it. Because that just feels mercenary AND it’s going to cause people to die that could have been saved when they start second guessing calling for help. And it’s a slippery slope because soon you could see differential charging for foreigners vs citizens and all that malarkey that they love in Thailand.

Also Taiwan is not short of funds , in fact it is one of the richest countries worldwide , and local governments will happily piss their budgets away towards the end of every year on various environmentally destructive endeavours.

That’s because if the money allotted for the year isn’t all spent, the people who handle the allocation of funds for the next year will regard that as evidence the recipient should be given less money in the future. And no local government/bureau/office wants that to happen.

As for some of the poor choices made for spending that extra money before the end of the year, that’s a separate problem.

No I told you already he WILL NOT.

Reread what I wrote it’s all there.

How foul. Good thing she definitely has access to all of her personal documents and can leave to a safe place…
