Wack Things in Taiwan 2026

Then what to do with the people who foolishly hike into the wilderness get dehydrated because did not bring enough water so call for helicopter rescue? So many cases like this…cramps or simply lost because hiking alone in area never been to before.

My wife’s aunt was hiking with her husband and got lost at night. The aunt is a very experienced hiker who has been around the world hiking serious trails. The husband was used to hiking but certainly at a much different level. The aunt told the husband to stay put and wait for morning. The husband said he saw a light and went to investigate. He died. This is serious stuff…hiking in Taiwan’s mountains.

The government tries to educate people about this but some people do have the attitude that I just call in a helicopter to get me. I can swim a little but I would not go diving without a license and proper preparation. If I ever was caught in a bad situation I would expect to compensate for rescue. If I get into a car wreck I pay for damages…to me this is similar. When you see people swimming in areas with “No Swimming” signs or hiking in areas without registering their trip (making an application) well…much of their actions is their own fault. The government already spends tons of money on medical support when injured or sick. There needs to be some limit to what government is expected to do with tax payer’s money.

Yes but be careful what you wish for because next more and more places will be off limits or needing prior permission and also more expense involved, invariably there’ll be a charge for a lot of these things.
It’s all a balance.
We don’t want to be applying for permits and insurance just to hike our local mountain trails or swim at the beach.
High mountain hiking is a different ball game and there’s already a lot of regulations and requirements for insurance , applying for permits and the use of guides in many cases.

Theyll proli get eaten by wild animals like the formosan bear

But mosr hikers i hear just want the thrill of an outdoor shag.

I will be more worry if the train small to stinky tofu than pork chops lol

How would you feel if Taiwan Railways offered a train car only for vegans? That’s what a German chef and artist promoting veganism in Taiwan envisioned in a recent post that set social media on fire. In Taiwan, the food offered on trains is the traditional railway bentos, which passengers happily gobble down in their seats. But Tamara Flussfisch says the lunchboxes fill the train with the smell of pork chops that assults the nose for hours.

These too!

Where did u get them? They look great!

Edit: seems like it isn’t from Taiwan due to the simplified chinese on the 餅乾. And 鬆

:face_with_raised_eyebrow:

Guy

It says Sam’s Club which I believe is a Walmart-run Costco equivalent.

THAT’s how the commies write 乾? The same character as ‘fuck’?

I guess it’s kinda fitting, communists will fuck you over.

I’m in China at the moment and they were on the table at a meeting, but you can probably get them on Shopee. Somewhat surprised that they actually tasted ok!

Eh, no.

Still no.

it doesnt mean car+eat??? mean drive thru???

I remember first arriving in Taiwan and hearing a scooter driver curse at another scooter driver who cut him off: 幹你老師!

That wouldn’t work as a curse word where I’m from: the other person would probably agree.

From this shocking report I believe the go to word is Asparagus in Kaohsiung.:joy:

阿西巴辣 — the version reportedly shouted in the incident
阿斯巴拉 — another Taiwanese written form
アスパラ (アスパラガス) — Japanese for “asparagus,” the likely origin

My MIL is known to utter this phrase, as well as your head is full of Kong-Ka-Li (concrete), another Japanese left over.

Only in taiwan !!

Hilarious

Not really, I have seen that done in the UK also, the classic one is commuters standing on one peddle and then pushing it.

It must be quite common as I have seen notices telling people not to ride on the platform on verious stations.

And commonly you’ll see people taking their bike for a walk in the park. Also hilarious.
