It was a hard watch, I’ll grant you that, but I liked the madcap nature of it. I’m a sucker for a goofy film. One of my all time favourite films is PeeWee’s big adventure for the same reason. Superking likes a goofball.
I’ve seen Marriage Story and I thought it was merely ok. The best I’ve seen from him is Blackkklansman where his screen presence fits the tone of the movie.
I’m going to watch ‘New Mutants’ tonight because I have a morbid interest in train-wreck films that had tortured development/production cycles. Wish me luck! (A lot of train-wreck films on Disney Plus)
Haven’t seen that.
I know it’s a petty reason not to watch a film, but the title kinda annoys me. How do I even pronounce that?
“Black Clansman.” The true story it’s based on is quite interesting, but the movie was pretty meh. Spike Lee movies are really hit and miss.
The only two I’ve enjoyed is ‘Do the Right Thing’ and ‘25th Hour.’
(‘25th Hour’ is one of the only good films to handle the after-effects of 9/11. Not too heavy handed or jingoistic or schmaltzy… just incorporating it as a depressing fact of life. Great score too)
Pretty much his best movie. I also liked Jungle Fever for Samuel L. Jackson’s crackhead performance.
i liked the old boy remake as well, saw it before i saw the original. and inside man. don’t think i saw do the right thing
It wasn’t a stretch for him at the time as I recall.
His Malcolm X biopic wasn’t bad either, I suppose. But yeah, I appreciate his unique style but definitely not someone whose new projects I eagerly await and hasn’t made a great film in a couple decades. A bit comparable to Kevin Smith (except Lee’s best film (‘…Right Thing’) is much better than Smith’s best film (‘Clerks’ or ‘Chasing Amy’))
Sorry, but I really hate that one.
I’ve heard decent things about ‘Inside Man’ though.
‘Do the Right Thing’ is a classic, definitely recommend watching it.
what do you think about the original and which did you see first?
Da 5 Bloods was aggressively mediocre.
I saw the original first. It’s one of my favorite films. It’s so visceral and beautiful in parts, even when it’s shocking. You have a score that’s pulse pounding when Oh Dae Su’s is immersed in his violence and haunting when he’s mired in his emotional trauma. There’s so much I love about this film: The hallway fight scene shot in one take, the octopus eating scene, the montage with him in the hotel for 15 years, Woo-Jin losing it on Oh Dae Su’s friend in the Internet cafe, the brutal confrontation with Woo-Jin’s henchman that mutes to silence when he gets a scissor to the ear, the “twist”… everything about it just thrills me and I’ve probably watched it a dozen times.
It’s been like 8 years (whenever it first was available streaming/rental) since I watched the remake my one and only time, but just everything it tried to do the original did better with more finesse and subtlety and authenticity. The climax of the remake was especially ridiculous. Iirc they made it unnecessarily convoluted. I guess it wasn’t horrible, but just a typical soulless Hollywood remake where the plot beats are familiar but seem hollow and inferior in how they’re executed. As I watched the remake I kept wishing I was watching the original instead. ![]()
no need to be sorry for hating the remake, then!
How can I watch that? Do you know?
Didn’t care for it. And I didn’t think the acting great.
Nightmare Alley was quite good, unexpected, suspenseful mystery great twist at end kept me interested, what goes around comes around ![]()
We can’t all like the same things. ![]()
