Saw it. Not sure why it got such awful reviews. It’s not great, but it was decent. Dare say more entertaining than many of the lesser MCU films of late, such as ‘Eternals.’ Fun cast. The ‘Queen’s Gambit’ actress did an especially good job portraying Magik (?). Formulaic story, but the fights are more fun than the usual CGI messes that you see in comicbook movies (these have giant smiling men and a demon bear, so it gets points for originality when it comes to the villains, at least). There are definitely worse ways to kill an hour and a half and it’s a bit of a shame this will be a one-and-done for these characters. 7/10
I saw it recently and liked it. I think the first half was stronger than the second half but overall it was enthralling and immersive, and gorgeously shot.
I also saw King Richard and didn’t really care for it at all. I know it all worked out in the end against all odds, but Richard Williams sounded hopelessly delusional. His plan about cultivating world no.1 tennis players was even more unrealistic than to enter in America’s Next Top Model and believe you could become the next Giselle Bundchen.
I also saw Being the Ricardos and thought it was quite terrible. The direction was intolerable and both Nicole Kidman and Javier Bardem were thoroughly miscast. Kidman couldn’t do a convincing American accent to save her life let alone inhibit Lucille Ball, and the atrocious makeup didn’t help, and Bardem’s accent was unintelligible.
Finally I saw Boiling Point, a one-shot take about what could go wrong at a restaurant. Now this is good.
Watched ‘Predator’ (1987) again for the first time in years. I’ve been revisiting Arnie action classics. This was still pretty fun, but I enjoyed my rewatch of ‘Terminator’ (1984) more. To me this is really the only entry in the franchise that counts for me (yes, I’m even including ‘Predator 2’ in that judgement). This is action with a side of cheese; a bunch of expendable meatheads with guns in the jungle. Don’t expect any great acting performances or deep characterization (I think that’s part of the reason I found ‘Terminator’ more enjoyable). But those action scenes are great (especially the climax) and the tension is developed well throughout the film’s running time. 8/10
I actually met the people involved with that film at a party in Taiwan. I didn’t realize it until much later this was the film they were talking about.
‘The Long Kiss Goodnight’ (1996) I became curious about this cult hit after hearing it was Samuel L Jackson’s favorite movie he’s been in (or favorite character he’s portrayed… I forget). It’s a fun, sorta brainless action flick. It has a strong female lead (modern filmmakers should take notes) and a lot of great action scenes. Geena Davis is a certified bad ass in this and it’s a shame she’s kinda forgotten today. Thematically the story of a normal suburbanite parent suddenly being exposed as a former, highly skilled assassin reminded me a lot of ‘A History of Violence’ (this came out almost a decade before that did, so it’s obviously coincidental). I think ‘A History…’ is the better film as the subject matter is treated a bit more realistically. The action scenes are great in this as I said, but it’s that old school brand of action flick in which characters become one-man armies and get shot a dozen times and are still fine. As I get older that stuff gets a bit harder to swallow. Ultimately, while it may be Samuel L’s favorite film of his, it’s not my favorite film he’s been in (not by a long shot). Still, it’s a fun enough film and good for a bit of escapism. Goes down well with a few beers. 7.5/10
Oh, that’s ‘Cutthroat Island’, which bombed so bad pirate films were banned by major studios until Disney came out with ‘Pirates of the Caribbean’ almost a decade later. As I mentioned upthread, I have a morbid interest in trainwreck films (especially ones that get more positive reappraisals years later as this one did), so I might check it out.
However, I can’t think of anything Davis has been in since the turn of the millennium though… hope she’s doing well.
A very beautiful woman. Her career hit a lot of the same notes as Sigourney Weaver’s. Early hit in the form of a horror film (Alien vs. The Fly), transition to comedy (Ghostbusters vs. Beetlejuice), but also known for bigger budget action films (Aliens vs. Thelma & Louise). According to Wikipedia this is the last thing she was in:
Personally I’d take Sigourney. Better filmography, and she’s amazing in Death and the Maiden.
