What was I watching the other day where they started pronouncing his name Score-Sez-E instead of Score-Say-Zee? Maybe that thing on Netflix with the pope?
I always thought it was Score-Say-Zee. It isn’t.
Very American vs Italian pronunciation surely.
Boiling Point
Really good. Was hella hesitant to watch another freagin cooking show. Different kind of cooking show except for the abrupt ending was odd. Suspenseful buildup, unexpected issues and emotions unrelated to cooking complicate the evening.
Get Duked
It was ok some funny, probably like it a lot if I was 15, but I’m not.
Licorice Pizza
Not bad, 70s period, simple teenage focused plot, Philip Seymour Hoffman’s son.
I was in the mood for some cosmic horror and Nic Cage’s Mandy came to mind as ready for a second viewing (it is odd, intense, and retro; I like it). A search on my AppleTV device showed that it was available on the Shudder channel and that I could get a free month of Shudder. It was easy to activate with my AppleID, which is great because I don’t currently have a credit card.
Shudder has lots of other great and classic horror films, and although I’m not seeing anything I haven’t already seen before there is lots worth rewatching.
Looks like I’ll be trying the free preview for each of these AppleTV channels that has one over the next little while (there is Paramount, and Starz, and etc.)
Ghostbusters Afterlife
The true sequel to the first 2 movies.
Loved every second of it.
Held true to the originals with tons of nostalgia. Looking forward to the 4th installment.

The Wild and Wonderful Whites of West Virginia
Hillbilly family shares their wild crazy poor sad life.

Keeping it going, I played The Mist this morning (have seen a few times and read a few times, didn’t need to pay much attention, that ending in the film version is so good).

Just put on The Void, which I think is underrated (if you’re into this sort of thing)
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4255304/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1
Also put this on, thought it was overrated the first time and this time didn’t pay enough attention this time to enjoy it

And now this one, which has a straightforward story and won’t need much attention to enjoy.

Unfortunately Ivan Reitman passed recently. So if they did another one, not sure who would direct it.
EDIT: Never mind. Ivan directed 1 and 2. His son Jason directed Afterlife (Ivan still produced it).
I’m watching a James Gunn-directed horror-comedy now (Slither) and am a big Sam Raimi fan (Army of Darkness, Drag Me to Hell), possibly Drew Goddard (Cabin in the Woods), or Ruben Fleischer (Zombieland, had to look him up)
Encanto (2021?) - The new ‘Disney’ blockbuster. It’s fine, I guess. The animation is superb and the songs were decent. Thought it lacked some of the depth and heart that their recent CGI pix like ‘Moana’ and the first ‘Frozen’ (the second one was mediocre) had. Here the emotions seemed a bit more… forced? Calculated? I don’t know. I wasn’t feeling it that much. Maybe I’m conflating all Latin American themed CGI films with spiritual (magical realism?) overtones that focus heavily on transgenerational issues, but it reminded me of ‘Coco’ which I much prefer. Still, entertaining enough. 7/10
He did a fantastic job with Afterlife
I like Dos Oruguitas and the yellow butterflies. That Bruno song is catchy too.
She was magnificent in Ice Storm. Unrecognizable. Talented.
I actually preferred most of the other songs funnily enough, like the one with the strong sister. It was okay. I just have a high bar for these Disney (and Pixar) flicks nowadays.
A Nazi-occult film directed by Joel Schumacher and starring Michael Fassbender, Henry Cavill, and Dominic Purcell? This should be awesome!
And yet, so far pretty awful. I guess the script is fundamentally flawed, can’t put my finger on any one thing (except maybe the premise?)…
The Mist, superb. Void and Endless mediocre. Haven’t gotten around to Colour out of Space yet but supposed to be solid.
Will recommend the underrated Dagon. Just so bonkers that it works.
I dug it, it was on Netflix in Canada before I came and I watched it twice. Not sure I have access to it right now, but high up there on the cosmic horror hit list
Dagon, not sure I’ve seen it, thanks for the suggestion!
edit: Seems Dagon was released by Shudder originally, but isn’t there now. AppleTV says it is available on Tubi, but when the app opens the movie isn’t there. Strange. Anyways, I’m not illegally downloading in Taiwan so will have to wait until it shows up somewhere I can watch
in the meantime, have updated my CV and will put on another background film I’ve seen and enjoyed that is part of my Shudder free month:
It Follows, a masterpiece. One of the few horrors that are genuinely scary.
Not a horror film, but quite unforgettable is Under the Skin with ScarJo (and yes you get some of her “skin”)
