What movies are you watching (2022)

Licorice Pizza -

Paul Thomas Anderson just can’t make a bad movie.

West Side Story (the new one) -

Though the biggest problem about this movie wasn’t really Spielberg’s fault. The story itself is so juvenile that there was nothing he could do to make it a good movie.

The choreography and the costumes aced, the songs were mostly awful/forgettable, and the cast was quite bad (except Rita Moreno and Ariana Debose).

What’s difficult to get? I think the message of that movie is really simple (and not overcooked).

I think Encanto has some good music but the narrative is very half-baked to me. Coco is just too saccharine.

Rebel Dykes

They had me with the title.

OK documentary, lesbians in 80s, protests, movements, clubs, culture.

Includes interesting time capsule about Greenham Common Woman’s Peace Camp
that surrounded an air force base for 19 years protesting weapons.

I watched the new Candyman on Amazon. Terrible. If you haven’t seen Velvet Buzzsaw, watch that instead.

After Yang, new Colin Farrell movie.

Arf! Arf!

The ending is god awful

Of the new Candyman movie? I have to admit, I wasn’t paying much attention by then…

Another by-the-numbers offering courtesy of Netflix data mining. Great cast, good special effects, nothing memorable

The premise reminded me of the South Park episode My future self and me.

Finally saw the new Spider-Man. It was way too long. Jesus. Can we just get a nice 90 minute story? The three spidies worked well, if not a little clunky. Electro was awesome, much cooler than doc oc.

Waiting on Batman.

Batman is more than three hours, just fyi.

I watch them at home. Took a walk during the midpoint of Spiderman.

I finally watched Marriage Story last night.

Excellent.

Fresh

Horror but some good reviews, weekend date goes cannibal-istiky wrong, did not expect female writer and female director.

Some might like but only slightly oddly entertaining for me

The Ringmaster

Larry the onion ring king and making of a bad documentary.

Some good reviews but not great or good for me.

We sat through, and constantly asked ourselves why.

Making Lawrence the centre of the story when he was actually just a bit player pretty well guaranteed that- OTOH, nobody would have wanted to see a bunch of Arabs at that time.
Omar Sharif was at least an Egyptian. Alec Guinness playing Faisal was brownface, but his acting was so good that an acquaintance of Faisal said he thought he had come back to life.

Swallow

Really like this movie. I don’t usually watch these type of movies but wow. Haley Bennet is great actress. She is also in Cyrano and others like The Girl on the Train.

Psychological thriller, no horror, a woman only has control of one thing in her life, really good intense and sensitive emotions, fantastic acting especially a key scene with the main female actor and an unexpected person towards the end.

I saw this and liked it a lot. Reminded me of

BBCrazy, yo. I want that house overlooking the Hudson bad.

The Phantom of the Open. It’s a British comedy about Maurice Flitcroft, who deceived his way into the British golf open qualifiers and shot the worst round in the competitions history.
Sally Hawkins is in it and she’s fantastic as always. And it’s co-written by Simon Farnaby (Horrible Histories, Yonderland, Ghosts) so it’s suitable silly.
It’s main themes are about trying your best, living life to the full and not taking yourself too seriously. I really enjoyed it.

Turning Red. Pixar, set in Toronto in 2002 with a Chinese-Canadian 13-year-old girl (who turns into a giant red panda) as a main character. Don’t usually like Pixar animation (Ghibli!) but this was enjoyable, especially the bginning and middle. End was a a bit too over the top, as usual.
