Just saw The Lobster. I give it a 8/10. It starts with a WTF bang and is absurdly and darkly satirical. Took me a while to fully appreciate its broader societal meaning, but once I did, I thought it was brilliant. The performances were superb and very stylistic. Highly recommended!
Do you know if it’ll be streaming soon? I missed it in the theaters and can’t find it anywhere now.
Very funny satire about a black author having to lean into black stereotypes in order to sell more novels. I laughed quite a few times, esp. the book contest panel - a riot from the video calls to the actual awards. The writing is very on the nose but also clever, and I’ve always quite liked Jeffrey Wright.
I don’t think many people would be interested in this one. It’s an almost 200 mins long, quiet, slice-of-life epic set in Eastern Turkey about a bitter Turkish teacher and other people in the town, and I was blown away. It’s completely stunning visually and the relationships between the characters are incredibly compelling and watchable. I specifically love how the characters randomly and naturally drop chilling information about terrible events in modern Turkey like they are just part of their every day life. So good.
About bullying in a middle school (or primary school) in Japan. I guess Kore-eda is just not my thing. The whole time I just wanted to slap the bejesus out of that little shit, which I’m sure isn’t the movie’s intention.
Victor Erice is back with the search of a missing actor and an ambiguous ending 40 years since his last movie and it’s glorious.
And now the old ones:
Pedestrian script about a husband, a wife, his alcoholism, their child’s death, and a young college tenant elevated by Shirley Booth’s tragic and layered turn.
Fellini is kind of hit and miss with me and this was a miss. There are some brilliant moments here and there, but overall I just didn’t care for it much.
I guess some people might know this criminal who’s supposed to be really famous in America back in the days. Lancaster was completely unconvincing as a loathsome criminal in the first 30 mins or so because a) he clean and fine af and b) wasn’t intimidating or dangerous at all, and it’s quite confusing that the film never explained why Stroud was never paroled when he had been about as well-behaved as a inmate could be and I had to look it up. That being said, it’s good other than some nitpicks. Lancaster completely aced the soulfulness and gravitas in the rest of the film, which he always did.
At the end of the film Tony Leung and Shu-Fen Hsin receive the news about their friends/family, and they break down in deafening silence - that scene concludes the oppression, sorrow, and confusion of our people in those days. I am very happy that we have stuff like this and Yi Yi (and a bunch of others) as our cultural touchstones. It’s also completely gorgeous to look at too. One of the stone-cold masterpieces of all time and the first 10/10 I’ve seen this year. I was deeply moved.
Big tabacco is gross and this movie is ok. Don’t have much else to add.
Godzilla or the Bob Marley movie ? If it’s Godzilla best to see it on the big screen should come around some time
I saw this on an airplane expecting to bored to tears/fall asleep but it was surprisingly great and I ended up staying up to watch the whole thing. I really enjoyed this movie
Godzilla. Thx for the tip. Will keep a lookout for it in theaters.
Just watched the legend of 1900. It was alright enough. A little cheesy at points, but overall a decent enough film. Some interesting points that makes one think a bit.
Really enjoyed this one. Great performances.
I have not been this uncomfortable watching something in forever. I don’t even want to say I love it because I was thoroughly disgusted and horrified during the entire sitting. The combination of the three layers - the sound of Auschwitz in the background, the picturesque garden and seemingly normal family, and the psychotic evil of the Nazis in the centre - is pure genius. There are so many blink and you’ll miss it moments that deepen the despair and barbarity as you go on, and everything culminates in a final sequence that makes you want to bile the fuck out.
It really is an astonishing and terrifying piece of art. I will be thinking about this for a very, very long time.
Yikes. That does look good, but pretty damn dark! On the list for a time something that dark might be possible to watch.
Blue Beetle (7.5/10)
Rosamund Pike and Peter Dinklage elevate everything they are in. I also enjoyed that one.
He helped make both of these movies good.
The Zone Of Interest
7/10
German concentration camp commander family. Minimalist beginning and then more information comes out. The juxtaposition really hits. Haunting.
Visually nice and having good sound really helps the experience.
@Gain I was ignoring this until you recommended it so thanks.
I think the more details you catch on the more disturbing it is and the more you understand its mastery. There were a few things I noticed when I was watching, but I also missed some and only realised by reading other people’s reviews. For example the “lilacs” Höss talked about actually refers to the female prisoners, so by saying something like “others can enjoy the lilacs too” he is referring to mass rape. Another one is near the end where we hear a prisoner drowned in the camp for fighting over an apple with another prisoner, the apple was left by the Polish girl who was leaving food near the camp as an act of kindness/resistance. That latter part is a true story btw. Glazer said that he met a 90 year-old Polish woman who used to be in the Polish resistance and she left food all around Auschwitz for the prisoners.
Also, take a look at this specific shot.

The steam comes from a Holocaust train transporting Jews to be exterminated. It’s nauseating.
Watched this last night.
Pretty easy to figure out. The Seventh Sign remake really.
My wife didn’t like it as she said it made her feel uncomfortable not knowing what was going on.
But that’s what MKS does.
The planes falling from the sky thing bothers me. Id actually really hate to see the cyberhacks or whatnot come to that.
i am blessed with the ability to completely forget a movie after a few years other than the knowledge that i have watched it before.
have been sick at home with the flu for about 5 days now and thus watching a lot of TV. After seeing everything i wanted to see on Netflix and Prime (which amounted to a total of 2 movies ) i switched to TUBI, free movies with ads (whereas on netflix and prime there were some movies i wanted to watch but you have to PAY…to me that is a 4 letter word on TV).
so anyhow i ended up watching TWO WEEKS NOTICE with hugh grant and sandra bullock. I only knew that i had watched it before but forgot about 95pct of it. Movie was an entertaining romcom, now why do i like romcoms?? There was a surprise guest TRUMP playing himself (who else would he play).
Another i saw was excellent with Michael Douglas and Diane Keaton
AND SO IT GOES , worth watching if you haven’t already. There was a surprise guest too, Frankie Valli .
Scary.
