What movies are you watching in 2020?

A Rainy Day in New York

Woody Allen’s latest and 48th movie or something.

Typical light hearted watch, upper class New England upper East side New York story.

Selena Gomez is not really interesting on screen.

Bob Hope’s comedic timing isn’t bad.

No7 Cherry Lane

This time, I rewatched Some Like It Hot, another Wilder-Lemmon collab. I wasn’t paying much attention the first time I saw it (teenhood, hormones, adhd…), but this time I gave it the focus it deserves, and boy does it not disappoint. Comparatively, SLIT definitely requires more leaps of faith and suspensions of disbelief than The Apartment, but I gotta imagine the comedy is just as sharp today as it was in '59. Both leads are great, as is Monroe, but boy did Jack Lemmon really shine even amongst a an excellent cast.

If it’s been a while for you too, time for a rewatch.

Recommend.

I just watched Cracked Up: the Darrell Hammond Story on Netflix.

One of the most remarkable documentaries I’ve ever seen. But don’t go into it half-cocked. This movie is about the effects of serious childhood trauma on the soul. It’s gut-wrenching. I watched most of it with fists clenched.

Good list! A lot of classics there.

I’ve seen 90% of them. Enter the Void is missing.

Great list, plenty I have not watched  I guess they didn’t want to put too many Lynch because otherwise how can you put Gone Girl or Get Out but not put Inland Empire…

Midsommar was very very weird. I cannot say I liked it, but it’s a movie you remember.

That makes no sense. Gone Girl was so incredibly mediocre.

I liked it. :man_shrugging:

For some reason, I watched all the pre-Nolan Batman films over the last few days. Here are my thoughts:

  • Batman: The Movie: More enjoyable than I expected it to be. It doesn’t take itself seriously and the actors look like they all had a brilliant time filming it. The renditions of The Joker and The Penguin, in particular, are top notch.

  • Batman: An excellent gangster film in which Jack Nicholson’s Joker steals the show. It’s so different to all later superhero films in tone and style that I wouldn’t even call it a “superhero film”. It’s its own thing.

  • Batman Returns: Much to my surprise (because I loved it as a child), this film was awful, with a story that makes no sense and boring performances. This is my worst Batman film.

  • Batman Forever: An objectively terrible film that was actually fun to watch. I’m not sure why they decided to take it down a much more light-hearted and campy road, reminiscent of the 1960s series they were previously trying to forget, but I did have fun watching it. I think it’s fair to say this is “so bad it’s good”.

  • Batman & Robin: Another objectively terrible film, pushed even further down the campy road, but with absolutely none of the fun and character of the 1960s series. Everything about it is terrible, but at least it wasn’t “boring” like Returns.

Will watch the old Superman films next.

Gone Girl was a huge hit because nobody’s seen The Last Seduction.

I guess. I was bored through most of the movie. I can forgive the mediocre acting (I mean Ben Affleck, come on) but I expected better from Fincher. At least more atmosphere or suspense.

Everyone knows 3 and 4 suck, but 1 and 2 (supposed classics) don’t hold up very well by today’s standards. Christopher Reeve is perfect as Superman, but prepare for maximum eye rolling at some plot points (like Superman making time go backwards by flying around the Earth, or Superman giving Lois amnesia from a super-kiss). It’s overall very dated.

I’m sure everything you’re saying will be accurate, but I’m curious to see just how bad Superman IV is in light of Batman & Robin. I will also watch the Richard Donner cut of Superman II for the first time, which is said to be the “definitive” version (and very different to the theatrical cut).

It’s a different kind of bad. B&R is so bad, it’s fun in a very stupid way. Endless meme material. Superman 4 is just bad. And the worse crime of all, boring.

La belle époque, 2019, fantastic French movie with Chinese and English subtitles. Showing at the SPOT theater Huashan. And intriguing retro soundtrack.
