There are already more than a few threads about this. Here are some of the many that focus on scooters - and of course there are dozens of other threads complaining about driving in general:

It just isnt worth it to be having your family on a scooter in Taiwan. Inconvenient as it may, I would ban all pillion riders on scooters or motorcycles.
Being on a scooter exposes you and your passengers to incredible danger and at times you may not expect.
Here is a father carrying his two young children, a boy and a girl on a scooter in Kaohsiung. He wasnt speeding and was apparently properly carrying his children.
A van comes and hits them dead on at speeds reportedly over 100 kilomet…
When I was last living there in 99 , Taiwan had about 10 deaths per day (Taipei city about one a day) for scoot/moto riders. Wonder if the stats are worse now or better or much the same.

4 died from speeding, late at night. Taking chances, not thinking of what ifs.
The two 17 year old girls on the back didn’t even have their fate in their own hands.
Ok so here’s the story, I’m riding my girlfriends scooter to go and eat at a restaurant. We’re on a quiet road looking for a place to park, so I’m on the very far right hand side of the road, riding really slowly, maybe 10-20 kmh. It’s quiet, and I’ve left a space large enough for a bus to go around me. I thought I saw a space so I stopped my bike to go into it, at this point there is no one behind me, or close to me. About ten seconds after I stopped, a girl who was easily far enough behind…
Let’s hear your thoughts on tackling the large number of scooters and the noise, pollution, danger and traffic chaos they create.
What can realistically be done? e.g. London limiting cars into the city according to license plate numbers
Obviously, this is a healthy democracy so a Singapore-like, authoritarian approach wont’ work. You can’t please everyone of course, but it would have to be fairly democratic in structure.
Ideas anyone?
electric scooters are silent, would this create bloodsh…
When I posted this last, it seemed to have gotten lost in another thread. So here it is again. We all know that riding in Taiwan is dangerous, so it’s important to think about what we can do to continue riding and avoid accidents. Here is my 2 cents on how to survive the roads of Taiwan. Since everyone rides differently, we all need to develop a personalized methodology, but here I think is a good template of ideas. (in order of importance) I am interested in what other ideas or critiques people…
I think this is a must read for all who ride bikes here. I got this from a mag.
STREET STRATEGIES ( must read )
Watch drivers’ heads and mirrors
Watching the head movements of drivers through their windows and mirrors is an excellent way to anticipate sudden moves.
Most drivers won’t lunge left or right without first moving their heads one way or another (even if they don’t check their mirrors).
Trust your mirrors, but not totally
your bike’smirrors can be life -savers but they don’t alway…
To make it short.
I hate them.
Their gasoline combustion is so terribly incomplete that it makes us become sniffers.
They are making such a big deal here if someone gets caught with a joint. When driving a scooter, however, you can let people sniff your gasoline as much as these things can blow through their pipes, often straight into the face.
Are these people aware of the health-risks involved in sniffing unburned gasoline?
For example; you could smoke pot everyday for 20 and more years a…
I’m here to whinge but I don’t know if I’m whinging in the right forum. If not, dear mods, you can move the post where it should be.
I just had an accident. I’m mad. I had a record of not having had an accident in my 2-year stay in Taiwan. Not anymore. All because of the stupid road condition.
I was on the way home on this windy road. There were absolutely no lights. The light on my scooter attracts moths and they flew right into my face and my eyes, so I had my helmet screen down. I c…
