this place say they make fresh pasta

There is a restaurant in Xinzhuang, near the baseball stadium called Murano, or Muranos. They are a fine dining Italian restaurant. Most of their food is about 200-300 a dish, but I think they make their money on the drinks. Anyway, they do a 12" Beijing Duck pizza for $250. Considering it is topped with lots of meat, it is a great deal. Two people would be full eating it for lunch. It wasn’t the best pizza I’ve ever had, but definitely worth trying.

What happened to Alleycat’s? All the locations I knew about are gone. Google says there’s only one left; does it really even exist?

Those joints may have been good at one time. But they have not been really relevant for about a decade, with far better places springing up, at least in Taipei.

I don’t know what that is but I would eat it.

Huh - yeah, looks like Huashan is the only remaining branch. As @afterspivak says, at one time they were a great option - but other equally good ones appeared.

EDIT: boy, apparently around 2004, forumosa was really excited about Alleycat’s: a four-part thread, and a separate one about food and service!

Haven’t posted here in over a decade, but got an email notification saying someone replied to this thread, which I had previously posted in.

I left Taiwan in late 2004, at the height of when Alleycat’s was the best on the Taipei pizza scene. I even posted in the Alleycat’s threads way back then. Came back to Taiwan in 2020 to find Alleycat’s a shadow of it’s former self, but thankfully there are many more options than there were back in the day. So, what are the “go-to” places nowadays for an great pizza? Even better if New York style.

Saw a few posts also comparing food in Taipei and Shanghai. Having just spent over a decade in Shanghai, my impression is that western food in Shanghai is generally better and more authentic than Taipei, albeit a lot more expensive, but no doubt a result of the much larger expat market over there. For Chinese food in general, I find the food in Taipei to be generally more refined, less greasy, more multi-dimensional. Of course, Shanghai food is way better in Shanghai, and I think Cantonese food likely gets the nod over there as well. There are of course exceptions and outliers to these observations in both places, but speaking on the average.

Reckon we are getting there for Western food. A decade ago Taipei was a culinary backwater with many western restaurants being owned by english teachers branching out.

Now Taipei has really pretty decent food from around the world, cannot compare with Shanghai, but much improved. The cocktail scene is top-class, competitive with most cities in Asia

I like Pizza Has a Face, I even think better than Little New York and Paulies, which are both great. It has a great craft beer selection as well

Faust Pizza is a really good one, reasonably priced good pizza

It was exciting at the time. There was actually other similar pizza already, but it was good for the time, good atmosphere, draft beer.

Is the Alleycat’s behind Taipei Main no longer there? It was one of two remaining locations of this once-vaunted chain that had about a dozen locations. I know the Huashan location is still there, as I was there a couple weeks ago.

What happened?

I don’t know. On the website I could only find the Huashan Branch. But I noticed there’s still a branch near main station according to Apple Maps.

You’re probably thinking of the branch that was on the backside of Q Square. It’s gone.
